It is okay to pass on the right if it means driving off the paved or main portion of the roadway. Below is an answer I gave to someone who was all stressed out about getting their permit. The written exam can also be.
Florida Virtual School
FLVS is great for students who might need to make up credits or would rather attend school online, but even though the courses aren't that long compared to in-school ones, sometimes it feels like the courses can really drag themselves out.
Because of this, many students who are taking classes with Florida Virtual School classes end up not submitting enough work, in turn getting kicked out, or worse.. dropping out of the course willingly.
A lot of students search the web for ways to get ahead in their classes, be it by finding the answers to their assignments on Yahoo! Answers, or by finding someone to do their work in return for payment. Whichever way they go, it's not very academically ethical, and they should know that there is another option: Working smart!
Work Smarter, Not Harder
Okay, well the paragraph title may be a bit misleading since it's always a good idea to work hard when it comes to your studies, but that doesn't mean you have to drain yourself and spend countless hours staring at your computer unable to focus, stressing yourself out.
I've taken a lot of classes with Florida Virtual School and I've found, over time, a few tips for finishing your classes faster.. sometimes as fast as in 2 months or less!
Since I know it can be a real pain to have a huge load of work to do for 18 weeks (according to the standard pace chart for most FLVS courses), I figured I should share my tips with other FLVS students who might benefit from them.
Tips for Finishing Your Classes Faster
Following these tips and hints will (hopefully) allow you to finish your classes faster than it would normally take. Not only are they useful, but they're also academically ethical, so you don't have to worry about using them!
Choose Easy Classes
If you're just looking to make up electives on Florida Virtual School, don't stress yourself out with a coursework-heavy class! Instead, don't be afraid to find and take much easier elective classes. Don't know which ones would be quick and easy to finish? You can check out a list of some of the easiest elective classes that you can finish as fast as possible here.
Examine Your Pace Chart
The pace chart is one of the first pieces of information that you're required to look over when you're placed into your chosen course. Usually, each semester has about 18 weeks worth of work (16 weeks with 2 weeks vacation).
Take your pace chart and create your own new pace chart -- it's important to submit at least the minimum amount of work per week, but you're more than welcome (and encouraged) to submit even more. Instead of an 18 week plan, try taking the pace chart and compacting it into a 9 week plan! Most pace charts require 3 to 5 assignments per week.. just bump that up to 8 to 10 assignments per week, and you'll be finished in no time!
Got a really easy class? You can finish even faster if you'd like, but be sure not to burn yourself out! Doing too much too fast is a surefire way to wear yourself out. Second life.
Set Dates to Do Work
A good thing to do is to have specific days each week that you'll work on your classes instead of just doing them at random, whenever you feel like it. Having specific days will help you stay focused on what you need to do. Try to keep the days as close together as possible since this will help you remember what you learned previously. Going to long without logging in and submitting work could have you forgetting what you learned, which is not fun at all.
It's not easy to stick to this schedule, especially when you've got a pretty demanding social life and with regular school if you attend it, but it's very manageable if you don't try to work 5 days straight for 5 hours each day. Try just submitting work Wednesdays and Thursdays for 5 hours. You might be surprised how much you're able to accomplish!
Listen to Music
For a lot of people, dead silence sucks. Music can help a lot of kids focus and finish their work, but it's a good idea to not get too carried away. For example, it might not be too easy to work when you're listening to heavy metal or upbeat pop, or if the music is too loud. Try to go with something a bit calmer or slower, and keep the music low.
While music may be a good idea, I don't recommend having the television on in the background, or doing work while watching a movie since it's very distracting and you'll end up taking 10x longer than normal to submit a simple assignment.
Hint: Using an online music streaming service is a great idea. Also, try to listen to music that you already know and have heard before. While it might seem like a good time to listen to that brand new album you have, it's not -- since you've never heard the songs before, you'll feel compelled to focus more on them than your actual work.
Do Your Assignments While Reading Through the Material
Most of the time, the answers to your assignments are in the material that you're required to read through. Instead of going through the module's material and then working on your assignment, look over the assignment first and then fill it out while going through the module's material. It'll be much easier and so much faster!
Hint: If you're taking one of the new courses introduced in early 2012, at the end of each module there is a text file with a 'review.' This isn't exactly a review at all, and is instead the whole module on one page! By setting aside an hour or two, you can easily finish a whole module worth of assignments by using this page instead of going through each individual page in the module for your assignments
Set Up Your DBA's Early
You're not the only one in the course.. actually, there often upwards of 60+ other students, so it's a good idea to keep on top of your DBA's and set them up ahead of time. If your teacher is going on a week vacation soon, be sure to get our DBA date made before they leave to beat the rush, because if you wait until they come back from their vacation, you'll find it's not easy to complete that DBA you needed to since the instructor will be swamped with other students and their DBA's.
Pay Attention to the Announcements Page
This is possibly the biggest tip I can give you, and it's important you actually use it! Oftentimes, instructors will hold collaborations and workshops where students can log in and complete a whole module in one session, which usually range from 1 to 2 hours. This is great, especially for students who might have some trouble with certain assignments that would be covered in the workshop. Make sure you attend these if there are any!
I hope that my tips and hints are able to help you out with your online classes! If you have any tips that you use and aren't listed here, please feel free to add them in the comments below so others can read. Good luck!
